Are You Ready for the NL Challenge?

Since 1996, outstanding ex-PYs have been given the honour to lead the Singapore contingent for SSEAYP. They are:

1996 John Vijayan, PBM
1997 Peggy Chua
1998 Jenny Koh
1999 Mohd Imhar Said
2000 Zulkifli Kassim
2001 Grace Ng
2002 Juliana Adam

Mohamed Zulkifli Kassim

Grace Ng Lai See

Wavelength met up with two extraordinary ex-PYs who had successfully done Singapore proud when they took up the call to be National Leaders. Mohamed Zulkifli Kassim(Zul), YL from Batch ‘93 led a contingent of 32 PYs in year 2000, while Grace Ng Lai See, a PY from Batch ‘87 led the Singapore contingent of 28 PYs in year 2001.

WL : What made you want to be NL?
Zul I see it as an extension of my attachment and service to SSEAYP. I have benefited tremendously from the programme and I wish to share and encourage others to take part in its noble mission.
Grace Having been a PY in 1987 and OBSC representative in 1990, I wanted to complete the experience of SSEAYP by leading a contingent as a NL. It is indeed a great honour to lead the Singapore contingent in 2001.
WL : How different was this role as NL compared to being a PY?
Zul Foremost is the responsibility and with that the challenge of making difficult decisions in the interest of the general rather than the individual. As we know, it is easy for PYs to be overwhelmed by the experience of meeting so many people and families in so many different environment and circumstances that they need to be constantly guided and advised in overcoming unfamiliar challenges. However, as I was formerly a YL, the transition to an NL is much easier.
Grace As part of the Cruise Operating Committee(COC), NLs get to understand why certain decisions are being made, which is something we might not understand being a PY.
WL : What were the challenges you faced being NL?
Zul The main challenge is how to avoid the pitfall of making decisions based on convenient rule of thumbs and achieve a balance between the group’s interest and that of the individual.
Grace Having to build up a contingent formed by strangers into a cohesive team and doing Singapore proud !
WL : What word/phrase would best describe your experience as a NL?
Zul It is best to be a PY but priceless to be a NL.
Grace Memorable as it shows how closely knit the SSEAYP family is.
WL : Any advice… for future PYs aspiring to be NL?
Zul Take up the challenge! It is an opportunity of a lifetime. NLship can both be a mirror and a barometer of your capacity, capability and self belief. Dealing with the challenges of managing a group of adults who are leaders in their own right is an eye-opening and enriching experience.
Grace It is an experience that you should not miss, if you can commit the TIME and ENERGY.
